It’s all about control – Mary T. O’Sullivan, MSOL

By Mary T. O’Sullivan, MSOL, contributing writer “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” Maya Angelou When change needs to happen, three things need to be recognized: what’s realistic, what’s sustainable over time, and what can you control? Embracing these concepts often stymie people who truly have a strong desire to alter their situation, whether it’s at work, socially or personally. Change is always challenging and making the commitment to make a transformation is often the most daunting part. Many people dig in and talk a lot about what needs to change in their lives. Their stories can go on forever. What they give the listener is a laundry list of grievances, that may in fact be egregious, but when they drill down to the essentials, it comes out that there is very little they can control about their situation. And how does this impact the act of making a change? What I’ve learned over the last n

RI Weather for January 23, 2023 – John Donnelly

Image
by John Donnelly, meteorologist We’ll finally get some snow out of this deal once the rain ends later in the morning to around noon. Low pressure moves offshore with a trailing trough around which cooler air filters in and allow for a changeover from rain to snow, albeit a heavy wet snow that will amount to about and inch, maybe two by the time it’s over in the evening. Morning highs in the mid 30’s sink to the lower 30’s in the evening with a northwesterly breeze gusting to 25 mph. ___ John Donnelly was born in Hialeah, Florida and moved back to Rhode Island and settled in Johnston, where he grew up until graduating from Lyndon State College in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology. As a child John always wanted to know how air moved, and he ran towards, not away from, thunder and lighting and various other ominous weather phenomena. He returned in 2001 to the old family neighborhood of Elmhurst where the McCabe’s, Donnelly’s, Walker’s and Callan’s have

Ron & Jen’s Great Escape – Jan. 18, 2023 – Ron St. Pierre and Jen Brien

by Ron St. Pierre & Jen Brien, contributing writers, commentary MY DAD You know, all this chit chat about Joe Biden’s garage got me thinking lately about MY DAD and HIS garage. A 3-car sucker right on South Main St in Woonsocket. As a kid I’d sometimes looked around in awe of all the stuff dad had in there, and when I got bored, I’d poke around in it! I’m sure he ALWAYS knew when I did that. Always knew. I remember how clean he used to keep it. You could eat off that thing as every Sunday (at least in late spring, summer, and fall) he would be out there, literally sudsing it down, scrubbing it, and rinsing it. It was wild. Then, he would shine up the white walls on his wood paneled station wagon, getting ‘em ready for Monday Morning. Yup, my dad. My super complicated, really, really, smart, super-complicated Dad. He and I had a challenging relationship as I always found my way into a mess, but till the end, he was always there to help mop it up. This July it will
